there is another barrage being fired from gaza into this part of israel close to the israeli border. as i was telling you, this town here on the border is one that does take a lot of fire very frequently. so this is really something that is very commonplace for the people here. >> frederik pleitgen and our crew there hitting the ground just there on the border. new israeli attacks also carried out in the past couple hours on targets in gaza. cnn's ben wedeman is monitoring events this hour in gaza city. he joins us from there. ben, we just saw fred pleitgen hit the ground, and i know it's just as tense there in gaza city. what can you tell us about what's happening right now? >> reporter: well, right now it's relatively quiet. we can hear the israeli drones overhead as we hear all day long, but, of course, just a few hours ago, in fact, 2 1/2 hours ago, we heard three large explosions, and this building behind me which you can't see because the electricity is caught off, got hit three times. in that building there are several things. there were the offices of a television station affiliat

to israel, this is a house belonging to a senior official of hamas, but at the same time there were 12 people inside of that house, including four women and four children. all of them killed. so many people are condemning that attack. meanwhile, it is nighttime here and the people of gaza are bracing themselves for what could be another night of deadly attacks despite the diplomatic activity in cairo. negotiations are under way as well as palestinian factions as to what to do next, but those here in gaza say they are preparing for a ground invasion, and meaning if israel launches a war, they will fight and they are prepared to defend their territory as they say and on the same side israelis say they have finalized preparation for a ground invasion and now it is a matter of a political decision, and certainly something that everybody in cairo is trying to avert, but one that everybody here thinks it is not going to be averted any time soon. thomas? >> well, you talk about the diplomatic conversations in cairo, and what is on the table? what terms are being discussed? >> well, two centra

deadly violence in the middle east overnight between israel and hamas. nbc chief foreign correspondent richard engel is in gaza this morning. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, matt, it is not a good time to be a hamas military leader on the strip. they are being systematically picked off, killed in their homes, in cars, on motorcycles, many have gone into hiding, turning off cell phones, avoiding all usual locations. israel's war to stop hamas' rockets continued. with 100 strikes in the air and from the sea. hamas is still able to launch homemade, iranian made rockets towards southern israel and tel aviv. there were around 40 new launches today. not all are hitting their mark because in israel there's a new national hero, the mobile iron dome defense system, proving to be the most effective of its kind in the world. of the thousand rockets israel says hamas fired in the last six days, about a third have been intercepted by the iron dome. in gaza, there are no air defenses at all, and israel appears to have superb intelligence, locating and destroying individual hamas home
